Transition's Tool Share and Bike Pool

Welcome to Transition University of St Andrews' My Turn! Here we base our bike and tool loan systems. To become a member please create an account. To loan tools you require a Tool Share membership.

1. Bike Loan

Our Bike Loan Scheme aims to provide you with quality “refurbished” secondhand bikes for long term, low cost rental. These are re-furbished by volunteers and professional bike mechanics so that they are safe, roadworthy and efficient.

If you would like to loan a bike, please create an account and save a debit/credit card. Available bikes and their descriptions are shown on our inventory. You can filter bikes by frame type, size and type (electric, mountain, town, road etc.).

We have now resumed our regular rental service. Please click here to view all the available bikes.

Reservations will be reviewed and approved/declined every Tuesday, with collections from the Old Burgh School on Thursday. You will be sent a message when the bike is ready to collect. Bikes are normally left secured to the bike racks so you can collect anytime once ready.

Please do not attend the Transition office in person if you're looking to arrange a rental.

Bike Sizes and Prices

Our bikes are listed under Small, Medium and Large frame sizing. Use the table below to find the frame size suitable for you.

We measure most of our bikes from the centre of the bottom bracket (BB) to the top of the seat tube. Some styles of bike might have shorter tubes depending on style and we will try to account for this. You can see more information on https://www.evanscycles.com/help/bike-sizing-hybrid

On the right you can find the fixed rental prices. A £70 deposit is added on top of the base payment to protect the bikes from malcare.

The deposit will be returned to the renter after the return of the bicycle.

2. Tool Share

The St Andrews Tool Share is a community group run by Transition University St Andrews that helps students, staff of the university and local residents to share and maintain tools together. Tool Share works just like a library. You can borrow tools and equipment (including DIY, kitchen and garden) instead of having to buy them.

  • It costs £15 to join for one year
  • You can view and reserve tools online
  • You can borrow up to 5 tools (at the same time) from Thursday to Tuesday
  • Reservations and returns are to be made by the Tuesday latest
  • Tool pick-ups can be made from Thursday onwards
  • Any one tool can be renewed 2 times allowing for a maximum loan length of 20 days

We are moving away from a face-to-face system with the first 6 lockers up at the Student's Union . All to give you more flexibility and accessibility. After you reservation is confirmed, you will receive an email detailing a locker number and lock code. Over the duration of the loan the same locker will remain empty so you can return your tool(s) using the same lock code.

If you would like to find out more about the Toolshare project, or get involved, please email Transition at transition@st-andrews.ac.uk.
